Remembrance at Southmoor
Last week’s Aspire Theme of the Week is ‘Remembrance’. During our special Remembrance assemblies throughout the week, students were welcomed into the assembly by members of our school orchestra accompanied by images to mark the 80th Anniversary of D-Day. Mrs Maw then delivered the key message about Remembrance exploring the key reasons why we continue to commemorate Remembrance Day each year. Students had the opportunity to hear the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ written by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae about why poppies have become the symbol of hope and remembrance. Students joined together for a moment of silence after the Last Post was played and then members of our own CCF were invited to present wreaths in front of our Remembrance board.
During Aspire AM, students have been writing messages of Remembrance on small wooden poppy posts which have been planted in our Field of Remembrance. These will be on display for the next week. On Monday 11 November, we will join together as a whole school for Armistice Day.
