Just before the summer holidays, we gave all students in Years 7, 8 and 9 the opportunity to enter Shell’s national STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) challenge for schools – The Bright Idea Challenge. 
 
We are absolutely delighted that Callum Reid in Year 8 has been announced as one of 14 winners and he is the overall winner for the whole of the North-East region! Students were tasked with using their STEM skills to come up with creative solutions to the energy challenges that cities will face in 2050. Callum’s idea involved the creation of a new generation of car named Imperium-H. This unique car has the ability to generate its own power source whilst in motion by using concepts from both physics and mathematics. In the long term, this car would become a prime factor in reducing the detrimental effects that climate change can produce.
 
Callum has won an amazing £2,500 for the school to spend on resources to improve STEM teaching and also a number of prizes of his own including a 12-month subscription to Kiwico’s Tinker Crate Kit.
