Wartime & Welfare with Southmoor Scholars
Andrzej Olechnowicz from Durham Univeristy’s history department ran a lecture on wars and welfare to our Scholars this week. Students started off by discussing a book entitled ‘War is Good for Babies and Other Young Children’, and how this could possibly be true. Andrzej then talked about three key wars – The Boer War, WW1 and WW2 – and discussed the ways in which wars lead to social welfare reforms, including healthcare and education.
